10-year Kradal Smart Foam Warranty
Engineered and manufactured in Australia for the long haul. Every Kradal Smart Foam floor is covered by a 10-year product warranty against manufacturing defects — giving facility managers, specifiers and procurement teams long-term confidence in their investment.

Kradal™ is a new technology to optimise energy absorption on impact with the floor or ground in order to reduce the likelihood of a fracture or an injury from a fall, while at the same time minimising deflection to avoid increasing the rate of falls.

Karlstad University in Sweden, (published in “Injury Prevention” , a BMJ Group Journal) found Kradal™ Flooring to reduce the likelihood of injury from falling by nearly 60%.

Kradal™ Smart Foam underlay is installed under sheet vinyl or linoleum.

Kradal™ has fantastic acoustic noise reduction qualities, is antimicrobial and it can be installed in both wet and dry areas such as bathrooms, hallways and bedrooms as it is non-water absorbing. Ask us about our floor drain tile for showers.

Kradal™ Flooring is designed for the Aged-Care sector for use in both residential and assisted-living facilities.

Kradal™ Flooring is currently installing in gymnasium and child-care facilities.

Our Story

The initial idea with Kradal™ was to make a hip protector — a device worn by elderly on their hips to prevent hip fractures when they fell over. We contacted the Aged Care Research Group at Otago University and they advised that hip protectors worked well but the compliance time and cost made them ineffective — someone had to make sure (24 hours a day) that the hip protectors were worn correctly; if not, they provided no protection. They asked if a hip protector could be embedded into a floor covering — and thus Kradal was born.

Otago University conducted many drop tests to check on impact absorbance, and then balance trials to ensure Kradal was suitable for elderly to walk on. Thirty elderly women walked across a balance beam so their stability could be measured. Kradal floor covering was firm enough for elderly to walk on safely but highly impact absorbing when they fell on it. Once installed, no one would need to turn Kradal on or make sure it was working. 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, it would be ready to catch anyone who fell — and not just prevent hip fractures, but any kind of impact injury to any part of the body. We then conducted a large-scale clinical trial in Sweden lasting over 3 years. The trial was designed and controlled by researchers at Karlstad University. The published results concluded that a near 60% reduction in injuries occurred on Kradal compared to conventional flooring.

Firm But Soft Impact Flooring

Fractures are a common yet serious injury resulting from falls. In Australia, hip and thigh fracture account for 32.5% of cases, spine and pelvis at 12.5%, and elbow and forearm at 12%. The average cost of treatment of fractures is approximately $15,000 with hip fractures costing $30,000.

Impact Testing showed a 46% force reduction compared to vinyl flooring.

Why Impact Absorbing Flooring is Essential

  • According to the World Health Organization, the global population of individuals aged 65 and over now exceeds the number of children under the age of 5.

  • 30% of people aged over 65 experience a fall each year

  • In 2016-17, 52% of people over 65 suffered from a fracture

  • The silver tsunami of an aging population is leaving healthcare systems short-handed.  With fewer doctors and nurses to tend to the growing needs of older adults, these vital systems are facing immense pressure

  • An independent study in Sweden has found that Kradal reduces the chance of injury by nearly 60%, improving quality of life years and reducing health system pressure
